Charles “Charlie” Empringham was a skilled blacksmith whose work helped shape the Scarborough community in the early 20th century. Born in 1884, Charlie married Ida Mary Ellen Walton in 1904 when he was just 19 years old.
He learned the blacksmithing trade and began his career in Malvern, later moving to the Scarborough Junction, where he operated a blacksmith and carriage-making business at the northeast corner of Kennedy Road and St. Clair Avenue. His shop served as a vital hub for transportation needs during an era when horse-drawn carriages were essential.
Charlie Empringham passed away on September 2, 1959, at the age of 74. His life and work remain part of Scarborough’s rich history of craftsmanship and community building.
