George Brown was one of Canada’s most influential 19th century figures, a journalist, politician and a pivotal Father of Canadian Confederation. After immigrating from Scotland to the United States in the 1830s, he next moved to Toronto in 1843, where he quickly made his mark by founding The Globe newspaper in 1844. At the time, it was the most powerful voice for Reform ideals, advocating responsible government, representation by population and the expansion of Canada westward.

Brown’s political career was equally significant. He played a central role in the Great Coalition of 1864, which broke years of political deadlock and set the stage for Confederation. His efforts at the Charlottetown and Quebec Conferences that year helped shape the framework of Canada’s federal system. Brown also co-founded the Liberal Party of Canada in 1867, leaving a lasting imprint on Canadian politics.

Beyond politics, Brown was a tireless advocate for democratic principles and national unity, often clashing with Conservative leader John A. Macdonald. His influence extended far beyond Parliament through his editorship of The Globe, which later evolved into today’s Globe and Mail, one of Canada’s leading newspapers.

Tragically, Brown’s life ended in 1880 after being shot by a disgruntled former employee at his newspaper office. Though the wound seemed minor, infection set in and Brown died seven weeks later at the age of 61. He was laid to rest in Toronto Necropolis, where his grave remains a reminder of his legacy.

In 1967, Canada’s centennial year, Ontario’s Minister of Education, Bill Davis, proposed that the new college of applied arts and technology be named in George Brown’s honour. He noted that a city shaped so profoundly by Brown’s work as a reformer, journalist and statesman was well‑suited to recognize his legacy in this way.

George Brown’s contributions to journalism, politics and the very foundation of the country of Canada continue to resonate today. His vision for a united, democratic country helped shape the nation we know today.
