Mollie Christie was a trailblazer behind Toronto’s modern social welfare network. As the Founding Executive Director of the Community Information Centre of Metropolitan Toronto, she created a vital resource for residents seeking help and support. Her vision laid the foundation for what is now the 211 helpline and 211ontario.ca, which connects people to community services throughout the province.

Christie’s leadership in the early days of social welfare shaped how Toronto responds to community needs. By championing accessible information and coordinated services, she helped transform social support from fragmented often siloed efforts into an organized system that continues to serve millions today.

Her legacy lives on every time someone dials 211 – a modern reflection of her commitment to making help easy to find and available to all. Her long and generous life, characterized by advocacy for the most overlooked and vulnerable in society, found its final resting place in the grounds of the Toronto Necropolis.
