Thornton Cemetery, Crematorium and Mausoleum

At the official opening of Thornton Cemetery, Crematorium and Mausoleum, a quiet but powerful moment unfolded; one intended not just for those gathered that day, but for generations yet to come.

Just before a time capsule was sealed on October 24, 1985, a letter from Ontario Premier David Peterson was read aloud by the Honourable Monte Kwinter. These words marked the occasion with formality, gratitude and a sense of provincial significance. This was not simply the opening of a new cemetery, but a moment of recognition: a commitment made in public, then entrusted to time.

As the letter was read, Norman McMurrich and Oshawa Mayor Allan Pilkey looked on. Their presence reflected the collective effort behind Thornton’s creation, municipal leadership, provincial acknowledgment and community vision meeting in a single frame. When the time capsule was sealed, it symbolized more than a record of the day. It became a message sent forward: that this place was created with intention, care and respect for both memory and the future.
