Mount Pleasant Cemetery
Triangle 23

The memorial honouring Steve Stavro is one of Mount Pleasant Cemetery’s most impressive tributes, showcasing a sweeping design that reflects a life of bold achievements. Born Manoli Stavroff Sholdas in Macedonia, Stavro immigrated to Canada as a child where he went on to build an extraordinary career. In 1963, he transformed a small grocery business into Knob Hill Farms, which grew into one of Canada’s largest grocery chains, famous for its warehouse-style stores and unbeatable prices.

Stavro’s influence extended far beyond retail. In the 1990s, he became majority owner of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, guiding iconic franchises like the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Raptors. His passion for sports also included thoroughbred racing, where he earned national recognition as a horse breeder and owner.

The monument, designed by acclaimed Toronto sculptor David Pellettier, is a work of art and storytelling. Crafted on a triangular plot, it features an historically accurate wartime horse, medallions and emblems representing Stavro’s life, including corporate logos like the Maple Leafs to symbols of his philanthropic contributions. Every detail required meticulous planning and legal permissions, making this memorial as ambitious as the man it honours.

Awarded the Order of Canada in 1992, Stavro was celebrated for his business acumen and generosity to arts, healthcare and community causes. He passed away in 2006, but his monument stands as a lasting symbol of vision, perseverance and impact on Toronto’s cultural and sporting landscape.
