Major William “Sam” Magee was one of Canada’s most distinguished soldiers of the Second World War, remembered for his exceptional courage, leadership and lifelong dedication to service. Originally a member of the Toronto Scottish Regiment, Magee volunteered for special duty early in the war and was selected for one of the most demanding military formations ever created. His determination and resilience carried him through the unit’s notoriously rigorous training, setting the foundation for a combat career marked by extraordinary gallantry.
Magee became the only Canadian combat soldier of the war to receive both the American Silver Star and Bronze Star for valour. He earned the Silver Star on June 1, 1944 near San Nicoli, Italy, when he braved intense machine gun fire to reach two wounded comrades, administer first aid in full view of the enemy and drag both men to safety. Three months later, near St. Agnes, France, he received the Bronze Star for helping neutralize a fortified enemy position and capturing 31 soldiers, preventing a costly frontal assault and enabling his company’s advance.
After the war, Magee remained in the Canadian Army, rising to the rank of major. He later became the first commanding officer of the re-established Toronto Scottish Cadet Corps and devoted many years to supporting youth programs, including running summer camps for underprivileged children. His legacy continues through the William “Sam” Magee Award, presented annually to a member of the Canadian Special Operations Regiment who exemplifies his courage and character.
Magee served in the 1st Special Service Force (FSSF), the legendary joint Canada–US commando unit known as the “Devil’s Brigade.” More than a fighting force, the FSSF became a powerful symbol of Canada–US friendship – two nations training, living and fighting as one. Their unity forged deep bonds of respect that endured long after the war and helped shape modern cross-border military co-operation. The Force’s remarkable story later inspired the 1968 film The Devil’s Brigade, which dramatized its formation, training and early combat operations.
