Dr. Aminul Haq’s journey from Lucknow, India, to the forefront of Canadian cardiology is a story of brilliance and dedication. Born and raised in Lucknow, he immigrated to the United States in 1972, earning a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Ohio and an MD from the University of Miami. Later that year, he moved to Toronto, where his career transformed cardiac care.
By 1982, Dr. Haq was a cardiologist at Mount Sinai Hospital. His expertise in interventional cardiology, particularly in stretching the walls of narrowed coronary arteries to reduce the need for bypass surgery, placed him among the leaders of minimally invasive heart procedures. In January 1987, as director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Toronto Western Hospital, he doubled the lab’s productivity, a testament to his leadership and innovation. That July, he was appointed co-director of the coronary intensive-care unit at Toronto General and Mount Sinai Hospitals, shaping advanced care for critically ill patients.
Dr. Haq’s legacy lives on in the countless lives improved by his work and in the improvement of cardiac intervention techniques he helped champion.
