Duffin Meadows Cemetery
Duffin Meadows Cemetery offers a serene setting with three tranquil ponds, each providing a natural refuge for wildlife and visitors. The largest pond is home to up to 20 koi fish, whose gentle movements are often noticed by those walking along the water’s edge. While admired for their beauty, koi have long held symbolic meaning across many cultures. In Chinese and Japanese traditions, they are commonly associated with qualities such as perseverance, good fortune and transformation, drawing on stories that celebrate their ability to swim upstream against strong currents. For some, their presence evokes a sense of calm, reflection and resilience.
In recognition of the cultural traditions and needs expressed by members of the local Chinese community, Mount Pleasant Group established a dedicated area at Duffin Meadows in 2002. Marked by a prominent red gate, this space was designed to support culturally appropriate burial practices and reflect values that are meaningful to many families. Within Chinese cultural traditions, red is often associated with auspiciousness and protection, and gates can signify transition, offering a respectful and symbolic threshold within the cemetery landscape.
