Beechwood Cemetery
Requiem Pacem

Among the many stories that define Beechwood Cemetery, few are as unforgettable as Tom the Turkey. Fearless and territorial, Tom made the cemetery his home for several years in the late 2010s and early 2020s, turning routine days into memorable ones for staff and visitors alike. He was known to block funeral processions, chase employees around their cars, and spend long moments admiring his reflection in shiny bumpers and hubcaps.

Efforts to manage Tom’s antics became part of daily life. Staff tried everything – from birdseed distractions to water guns–, to lure him away from the main office. Yet, no matter how far he was escorted, Tom always returned, strutting back to reclaim his favourite spot. Staff would often catch him watching them work through the cemetery office window. Families noticed too; survey comments mentioned him so often that staff joked he deserved “Employee of the Month,” every month.

Tom’s presence was more than mischief; it became part of Beechwood’s identity. His bold personality and unpredictable behaviour brought humour and humanity to a place often associated with grief. For those who worked there, Tom was a reminder that life, in all its spirited forms, continues even in spaces of remembrance.
