Duffin Meadows Cemetery

Duffin Meadows Cemetery offers a serene setting with three tranquil ponds, each providing a natural refuge for wildlife and visitors. The largest pond is home to up to 20 vibrant koi fish, their graceful movements captivating those who stroll along the water’s edge. These ornamental fish are more than a visual delight; they carry deep cultural meaning. In both Chinese and Japanese traditions, koi symbolize luck, abundance, perseverance and ambition. Rooted in ancient legend, koi are celebrated for swimming upstream against strong currents, symbolizing resilience and transformation. Their presence here reflects these timeless values, offering peace and hope to all who visit.

Recognizing the importance of cultural heritage, Mount Pleasant Group introduced an area that would appeal to the Chinese community in 2002, complete with a striking large red gate. This space was designed to meet the specific needs of the growing Chinese community, ensuring respectful and culturally appropriate burial options. In Chinese culture, a red gate is often used to symbolize good fortune, ward off evil spirits and provide a grand entrance to the afterlife.
