Irene Pearl Courtice Lambert: A Nursing Sister’s Sacrifice
1886–1963
Prospect Cemetery
Section 7 Lot 1235
During the First World War, Canadian women stepped forward to serve in unprecedented ways. Among them was Lieutenant Nursing Sister Irene Courtice Lambert, who joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps, providing care to soldiers wounded in the brutal battles overseas. Nursing Sisters were commissioned officers, a groundbreaking role for women at the time, who worked under fire in field hospitals and casualty clearing stations, often in harsh and dangerous conditions.
Upon her return to Canada, she married Rev. Sidney Lambert, war vet and eventual founder of War Amps. Irene’s dedication placed her among the ranks of those who risked everything to save lives.
Irene passed away in 1963. Both she and her husband are buried at Prospect Cemetery. Irene Lambert’s story reminds us that heroism is not only found on the battlefield, but also in the quiet, steadfast care of those who seek to heal their wounded colleagues and others injured in war.
